CHRONIC STRESS IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY

CONVERSATIONS: Welcome

Conversations

The fashion industry is a dynamic and exciting space to work in, where creativity is abundant and social norms are pushed to their limits. For all of the benefits there are for working in fashion, one drawback is that at times, the industry seems oblivious to its high-pressure, high-stress work environment. A main goal of this project is to address this problem by having open conversations about stress in the fashion industry, and what we can do to focus more on mental and physical well-being in the future. Below are a series of interviews I conducted with fashion professionals in which we address these topics and discuss strategies for dealing with them together. Keep checking back for more interviews as they will continue to be posted regularly!

John Bartlett, current Director of the Marist Fashion Program, has over 30 years of design experience in the fashion industry. He has worked for Liz Claiborne, Ghurka, and Bonton, as well as showing his own collections worldwide. Director Bartlett was nice enough to let me interview him about the pressures of being a designer in the fashion industry, and the tools he uses to manage the stress in his life.
