The Stress Factor Intro
The Rundown
Chronic Stress is defined as stress "resulting from repeated exposure to situations that lead to the release of stress hormones." Biologically, humans are only intended to experience stress in small bursts so that they may protect themselves in dangerous situations. However, chronic stress results when that quick stress response is prolonged due to a continuation of the stressful event or situation. This prolonged stress response can result in physical and mental health ailments.
Those who work in the fashion industry tend to experience high levels of chronic stress due to a high-pressure work environment and never-ending fashion consumer cycle. The problems that chronic stress poses are not unique to the fashion industry, however while majoring in fashion during my time at Marist, I noticed patterns in the fashion industry that promote chronic stress. Fashion is all about creativity and it should be exciting to work in the industry, but creativity is hindered by excessive amounts of stress. If the industry as a whole were committed to reducing stress on an organizational level, individuals would experience less chronic stress and be more productive and creative as a result.
Many people who suffer from chronic stress do not realize what they are experiencing as being under a constant state of stress has become normalized. This project aims to help individuals identify chronic stress patterns within themselves, and connect these individuals with resources to deal with their chronic stress. Throughout the semester, I tried a series of techniques to combat stress and I documented my experiences in hopes that these methods would resonate with others. These techniques range from yoga, to targeted meditation, to reading. Read about my recommendations and experiences here.
I personally have dealt with chronic stress for many years which is why I was first drawn to the topic. My chronic stress resulted from years of taking on too much and not allowing myself to have enough rest. Additionally, I fell into negative patterns of keeping my stress bottled up without seeking out help. I assumed feeling constantly stressed and overwhelmed was normal, which is most certainly not the case. I wanted to share my journey with chronic stress in hopes that others can learn from me and live happier, healthier lives as a result.
